Share

Planning to climb Mount Kinabalu for the first time? A climbing package can make the experience easier to organise by combining important arrangements such as permits, accommodation, transportation, meals, mountain guides and other climbing services.

Mount Kinabalu stands at 4,095.2 metres, with Low’s Peak being the highest point. Climbers are required to use a registered mountain guide, and Sabah Parks recommends having at least a basic level of fitness.

Before booking, here is what you can generally expect from a Mount Kinabalu climbing package.

1. Transportation to Kinabalu Park

Many packages begin with a transfer from Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu Park. The journey takes approximately two hours, depending on the starting point and road conditions.

Once you arrive at Kinabalu Park Headquarters, you will complete the necessary registration before being transferred to Timpohon Gate, the usual starting point for the climb.

The journey itself can be enjoyable because you will pass through Sabah’s countryside, villages and highland scenery before reaching the mountain.

2. Registration and Mountain Guide

Before starting the climb, climbers will complete the required registration and receive an identification tag.

A registered mountain guide is compulsory for Mount Kinabalu climbs. Guide arrangements are normally handled as part of organised climbing packages.

The guide will accompany the group during the climb and help ensure that climbers follow the designated route and safety procedures.

3. Trek from Timpohon Gate to Panalaban

The first major part of the adventure is the climb from Timpohon Gate at approximately 1,866 metres to Panalaban Base Camp at around 3,272 metres.

This section usually takes around 4–6 hours, depending on the climber’s pace, fitness level, weather and trail conditions. Along the way, you will pass through different vegetation zones, including rainforest, mossy forest and higher-altitude landscapes.

Expect plenty of stairs, uneven terrain and steep sections. The climb is physically demanding, so pacing yourself is important.

4. Overnight Stay at Panalaban

After reaching Panalaban, climbers normally check into mountain accommodation such as Laban Rata Resthouse or other Panalaban huts, depending on the package and availability.

Do not expect a luxury hotel experience. Accommodation at the mountain is designed for climbers, and some packages use shared dormitory-style rooms with shared facilities.

After dinner, most climbers rest early because the summit climb starts during the early hours of the following morning.

5. Early-Morning Summit Climb

One of the most memorable parts of the experience is the early-morning summit push.

Depending on the package and conditions, climbers may wake around 2:00 a.m. for a light meal before beginning the climb towards Low’s Peak.

The higher section becomes more challenging, with steep granite surfaces and rope-assisted sections in places. Your guide will help you follow the route safely.

The goal is to reach Low’s Peak at 4,095.2 metres, often around sunrise if weather and climbing conditions allow.

6. Sunrise and Mountain Views

Reaching the summit can be one of the highlights of the entire trip.

If weather conditions are favourable, climbers may experience sunrise above the clouds with spectacular views across Sabah.

However, summit access is weather-dependent. Sabah Parks may close the summit route when conditions are considered unsafe, so reaching the summit should never be treated as guaranteed.

7. Meals During the Climb

Meals are commonly included in organised climbing packages, although the exact arrangement varies.

Depending on the itinerary, you may receive:

  • Packed lunch
  • Dinner at Panalaban
  • Early-morning supper
  • Breakfast
  • Lunch after the descent

For example, current 2D1N packages can include packed lunch, dinner, supper, breakfast and lunch as part of the stated meal arrangement.

It is also a good idea to bring small high-energy snacks such as chocolate, nuts, biscuits or energy bars.

8. Climbing Equipment and Clothing

You should be prepared for changing weather and cooler temperatures at higher elevations.

Important items can include:

  • Hiking shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof or dry bag
  • Warm clothing
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Hiking pants
  • Windbreaker or jacket
  • Extra socks and clothing
  • Gloves
  • Warm hat
  • Raincoat
  • Head torch
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Personal toiletries
  • Energy snacks

A head torch is particularly important because the summit climb begins before sunrise.

9. The Descent

After reaching the summit, you will return to Panalaban for breakfast before continuing the descent towards Timpohon Gate.

Although going downhill may seem easier, the descent can still be physically challenging because your legs will already be tired from the summit climb.

Once you reach Timpohon Gate, you will normally be transferred back to Kinabalu Park Headquarters and then onwards to Kota Kinabalu, depending on your package.
